How to use Evernote to improve your English

Here at CSL, we're always trying to find new ways of helping our students learn better. You can read about using mind maps in our lessons elsewhere - but today we would like to show you a way of organising your notes and reading material, online. It's easy and fun - and we've got lots of advice to get you started!

The tool we'll discuss today is Evernote. You can read about this free application on its official website - but it's easiest to download it straightaway and start using it. Basically, the application allows you to access your notes, clipped articles and ideas from anywhere online - laptops, iPads, even mobile phones!

There are countless ways to use Evernote, but today we'll focus specifically on language learning.

1. Flashcards - They are a brilliant way to store and test your knowledge. Evernote's feature for iPad enables you to use flashcards easily. See for yourself - check out the video below:
This works for any subject, but it's easy to use it for learning new words and phrases in English - just enter the word or phrase, the definition and / or pronunciation, example sentences - and you're ready to revise your English!
Another brilliant way of importing your flashcards into Evernote is to use Studyblue. This application works with evernote, and not just on iPads - as shown below:

2. Control your text library - If you want to learn English better, one of the key skills is reading. With Evernote, your articles and texts can be stored in one place, where you can easily search them (this article explains how to do it - with Japanese, but English works just as well). As you keep on reading and learning new words, your text library will increase - and so will your enthusiasm for learning!

3. Manage your bookmarks better - With Evernote, it's easy to decide what interests you - and how you want to store it. You can, for example, set up separate notebooks for different areas of study - General English, business phrases, writing practice and so on. For more on this subject, consult this useful introduction.

What's the most important thing to remember while using Evernote? Don't give up. It might feel strange and awkward at first, but like every system, it's going to become a lot more usable after you fill it with your notes. Remember, you decide how you want to use it - make it enjoyable and useful for yourself!
